Tennis History
The modern game of Tennis, called the “Lawn Tennis’ originated in England in the late 19th century. Although there have been traces found of the game in the country of France, dating back to the 12th century, when the game was called “real tennis’.
The game of Tennis, made popular by the affluent class of people living in England, carries wide spread interest across different sections of the society the world over. The rules of the game have been unchanged since the inception of the modern version from the late 19th centuries, only with the exception of addition of one aspect which has been included.
In modern times, there are a lot of tournaments which are organized world over for the game of tennis. There are many professional circuits which organize these tournaments with the participation of hundreds of professional players. There are four major prestigious tournaments which are organized during a year, called the ‘Grand Slams’ alternatively called the “Wimbledon”, “US Open”, ‘Australian Open” and the “French Open”. As the name suggests all these tournaments are organized in different countries and are played on four different kinds of playing surfaces. All these tournaments are for professional players, apart from which there is one annual tournament where in there is participation of countries; called the “Davis Cup”. Players participate representing their respective countries for the “Davis Cup” title.
Different game formats are used during the course of a particular tournament, namely Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s’ Doubles, Mixed Doubles etc. Most of the grand slam tournaments have specific age limits for players participating. Junior tournament is organized for players below the age of 18.
