Squash Rules

A racquet game, played generally between two players or two sets of two players each in one team. Although originated in United Kingdom, the footprint of the game is increasing day by day, as more and more people across the globe are adopting it.

Similar to the game of tennis, the game of squash is played in a court, called the ‘Squash Court’. The basic difference between Tennis Court and a Squash Court is that the Squash Court is an enclosed area with four walls. The players are supposed to hit the ball on the front wall instead of hitting it over the net as in tennis. As in tennis, the game of squash is also played with a racquet, although the size of the squash racquet is different from the tennis racquet. The racquets are made of metals like graphite or titanium etc. can weigh a maximum of 255 grams. The squash balls are also different from tennis balls, being smaller and lighter in size and weight.

The squash court is 32 feet long and 21 feet wide. The playing area is demarcated by lines marked on the walls of the court of various dimensions. As per the games norms, the balls are supposed to be hit within the demarcated lines in the playing area, for the players to score points. The players hit the ball by taking turns ensuring that the ball hit within the prescribed playing limits. Balls are permitted to hit the side and back walls as long as they are within the prescribed lines for the particular walls. After the ball is hit on the front wall in the serve, it must be allowed to hit the floor once before the opponent can take a shot to continue the game. Obstructing the opponent while taking a shot is not permitted and in such cases the points are awarded to the player that has been obstructed.
